World War I - The Great War

The War to End All Wars, or The Great War was a worldwide conflict between countries with far-reaching effects on many societies. The war which began in 1914 after the assassination of the Austrian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand and lasted until 1918. The major Imperial powers Germany and Austria-Hungary, and their political allies Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain and her empire, France, Russia (pulled out in 1917), Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States (1917) (the Allied Powers). This Great War was supposed to end all wars in the future due to the death and destruction levied on countries worldwide.
